To earn a prospect’s trust, I say prospect because you should be writing to an ideal prospect that fits your particular niche. Being an affiliate comes with inherited caution from prospects; should they believe in your content because of your recommendations? Or not believe your content, because you are only recommending said product or service just to earn commissions?

This is why you need to gain trust. Because a great product alone is not enough to drive sales, you also need confidence. Trust is much faster and easier to lose than it is to gain or regain, this is how to succeed in affiliate marketing,  build trust.

How to Recommend Your Products or Services

Start treating the visitors to your website as your friend or a member of your family.  Instead of throwing products into their faces, recommend those products that you think will do them well.

Promote what you have had an opportunity to use yourself.  Every affiliate product comes along with some positives as well as negatives, and being an honest affiliate marketer wanting to build trust, you should talk about both aspects of a product or service.

Writing content showing all aspects of your marketing campaign shows the readers that you are there to provide real value.

In his book, The Trust Edge,  Author David Horsager outlines what he calls the 8 Pillars of Trust, and how to implement them in your life and business. I would like to add transparency to this list

The eight pillars include:

1) Clarity: People trust the explicit and distrust vague content.

2) Compassion: If people recognize that you are sincerely interested in helping them and not just helping your self-interests, they will put more trust in you.

3) Character: Integrity, and time build trust. Show good style by being humble, having principles, self-discipline, and accountability.

4) Competency: Create a plan for staying competitive. Stretch your mind with new ideas, fresh thoughts, and different viewpoints. Be intentional with your downtime. Prioritize learning.

5) Commitment: Without the commitment from the leader, the team cannot win. Passion is the essential ingredient for commitment and engagement.

6) Connection: Relationships build trust. Ask great questions and listen. Care about others. Be genuine. Be grateful. Avoid complaining. Apologize sincerely.

7) Contribution:  Actions that make a difference and deliver results that are focused, clear, realistic and consistent with your vision.  

8) Consistency: Trust is built over time. Action, not words build trust.

To build trust, you must apply and practice all 8 of these trust pillars. Being inconsistent with any one of them begins to break down the level of trust others will have in you.

A Relating Survey

According to a recently published study, by Optimus Performance Marketing. Brands that use affiliate marketing to promote their products or services gain significantly more trust from consumers.

Considerably more than those that use just digital marketing strategies such as email marketing, social media marketing or even banner advertising.

The study surveyed 1128 online shoppers and 206 bloggers (who do not use affiliate marketing to monetize their sites) a series of questions.  Each person interviewed has a basic understanding of what affiliate marketing is. When asked what type of marketing they felt was the most effective, the results were:

Social Media Marketing – 33%

Email marketing – 21%

Search engine marketing – 16%

Affiliate Marketing – 13%

Display advertising – 6%

Other – 11% 

The Results

What do you think?  Now judging by the survey, affiliate networks need to inform the public better, on how good affiliate marketing is. Therefore, we know that when done correctly affiliate marketing can drive huge numbers. Social media, email, and search marketing are all used by affiliate marketers, so that has impacted the results of this question.

The survey provided people with a list of 50 well-known brands and retailers. The list was made up of half brands that used affiliate marketing, and half that did not. Based on that list, they were asked to score each company on a scale of 1-10 regarding how trustworthy and reliable they perceived them to be.

In the results, all the brands that did not use affiliate marketing averaged a score of 5.7 out of 10. Those who do participate in affiliate marketing, however, got a 7.7 out of 10.  That means they scored over 33% higher than the non-affiliated companies.

Furthermore, the key to affiliates obtaining trust is honesty and communication, apply these two elements to your blogs properly and you will begin to attract an audience that trusts your content, which will lead to continued growth, and your business becoming a brand with authority.

    Maurice, I agree with you, trust is paramount, and you obtain that through clarity, honesty and competence in your field of expertise. Sometimes however, it’s easier said than done. If I may bring you an example, I have a dog related website. My website had a boost in traffic as soon as I published an article about an illness which relates to a specific breed. I published that article a year ago, and the article is still attracting visitors. But those same visitors do not take to my suggestions – genuine suggestions – of a personalised diet for that breed of dogs. It’s a recommendation which is backed up by veterinary expertise, but it’s not one that seems to be welcome by my viewers. What next step should I take?
